What Is Branding in Marketing?

Branding in marketing is the process of creating a symbol, design, name, slogan, and marketing content that aligns with your company’s values. Companies market their brands to align what they want people to think about the company with what people actually think about the company.

Marketing involves promoting specific products, and branding is the process of figuring out a company’s values and image. That means that branding in marketing is the process of promoting products through a company’s greater image.

Why Is Branding Important in Marketing?

Branding is important in marketing for 3 main reasons:

  1. Branding helps clearly deliver a message: Encouraging consumers to buy a certain product or engage in certain behavior is easier when they associate a request with a particular brand. Having a strong overarching brand makes it easier to clearly and persuasively ask customers to take action and buy a specific product.
  2. Branding confirms the product’s credibility: Products seem credible when they are pitched from a brand that has a good reputation. Leverage a strong brand to earn credibility and trust for specific products.
  3. Branding connects consumers with the right products: Having a strong brand helps connect potential customers with the right products. A company that has a brand reputation for being sporty and athletic will attract customers who are looking for sportswear products. Then, the company will simply be responsible for continuing to create products that meet customer demand.

What Steps Are in the Brand Marketing Process?

  1. Determine a target audience

  3. Create value propositions
  4. Determine brand guidelines
  5. Market your brand

Here’s an explanation of each step in the brand marketing process.

  1. Determine a target audience: Brand marketing requires knowing what audience you are targeting with your communication. A company should identify its target audience and tailor its mission to meet that audience wherever it can. Specifically, brand marketing should exist to create campaigns that meet the needs and desires of customers.
  2. Research competition: What are other companies doing? What kind of brand marketing processes do they have? What makes your selling proposition unique and the best option for a given customer?
  3. Create value propositions: Focus on what makes your brand unique and valuable. Value propositions set your business apart from your competitors. How does your business stand apart from the rest of the market? Include your value proposition in every brand marketing material. You don’t have to be explicit. Just be able to answer the question: What does this product do for me that another product couldn’t?
  4. Determine brand guidelines: Make sure there are consistent guidelines regarding your brand logo, colors, slogans, and language. Maintain consistency across your various marketing channels (print, television, internet, etc.) to maintain customer loyalty.
  5. Market your brand: Have a strategy to market your brand. Use channels such as email, social media, and commercials. Display your brand as widely as possible.
